Room to Read

Room to Read is an organization devoted to bringing literacy to the developing world in Asia and Africa by building schools, bi-lingual libraries, computer labs, and providing girl’s scholarships to help bridge the disparity between male and female education. The organization’s goal is bold – to help 10 million children in the developing world gain the lifelong gift of an education. Founded by a former senior Microsoft employee, John Wood, in 2000, Room to Read has impacted the lives of over 1.3 million children by:

- Constructing 287 schools
- Establishing over 3,870 libraries
- Publishing 146 new local language children's titles representing over 1.3 million books
- Donating over 1.4 million English language children's books
- Funding 3,448 long-terms girls' scholarships
- Establishing 136 computer and language labs

The organization has won a number of awards since its founding, including TIME’s 2004 Hero Award and for 4 years running the Social Capitalist Award, an award used to recognize organizations that use creativity, business smarts, and hard work to invent a brighter future.
